U2’s strategy may have sparked attention, but did the decision follow best practices in pr?

Yesterday, two members of Newish were given the opportunity to visit Storyful in Dublin. Kianna and I were joined by five other members of different groups on our trip. Walking there was an adventure in it’s own, and learning to use the bus back took a little bit of time and patience. All in all, it was an incredibly worthwhile experience for the two of us.

Wandering through the streets of Dublin passersby are berated with signs saying “yes” or “no.” Ireland is about to vote on marriage equality. It is the first country to put the issue to popular vote.

Dubliners have hit the streets to raise awareness of the issue and secure the vote. Marriage equality is a controversial issue in the country where voters are deciding whether to embrace change or stick to the status quo. The world’s eyes are on Ireland as the outcome may define how marriage equality is viewed in other nations.

A few of our team members, Karianne and Ryan, got the chance to check out an international ad agency in Dublin on Monday, called Publicis. There, Karianne and Ryan were able to speak with a variety of professionals, one of which was Ian, who works in Client Services. Karianne plans to pursue a career in client services so it was incredibly beneficial for her. Both, Ryan and Karianne were able to reference many of the different campaigns Publicis mentioned such as: Bill Bernbach’s VW Beetle ads as well as Hunky Dory. Does that sound familiar? We did a post on it not too long ago. Click here if you missed it.

When I first arrived in Dublin, one of the first things I noticed was these "Vote Yes" and "Vote No" posters everywhere. On Friday, May 29, Ireland will be voting on a referendum to propose an amendment that would legalize same-sex marriage in Ireland. I visited the headquarters of the Yes Campaign, located off of Grafton Street, and spoke with a representative who said that same-sex female couples are more heavily discriminated against than same-sex male couples. This reflects Ireland's deeply rooted history with a religion that is historically oppressive to women. These campaign posters are the majority of the advertising I have seen in my week in Dublin.
