Ever wonder what it would be like to travel inside the studio that created some of the most influential music, and culture? Thanks to Google and Abby Road Studios, it is now possible to get an exclusive glimpse into this musical mecca through Inside Abbey Road.
According to content.time.com, Abby Road Studios opened in 1931 and was, “the first custom-built studio complex of its kind.” Since then, the studio has been a recording home to famous musicians such as Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Kanye West, Coldplay and of course The Beatles.
Inside Abbey Road allows users to experience a 360-degree guided tour of the studio. Throughout the journey, users are guided by either producer Giles Martin, head of Audio Products Mirek Stiles, or Lauren Laverne, a broadcaster. During each portion of the tour, viewers are then able to click through the studio, similar to Google Street View, see the different types of recording equipment and watch videos and photos of music being recorded in the studios.
The tour starts off in Studio One where scores from films such as Star Wars and Harry Potter have been recorded. In this studio, viewers can try their hand at the mixing desk where users can test their own musical ear to see if they can create a musical mix for a song.
Inside Abbey Roads then proceeds to Studio Two, which is, according to the studio, “perhaps the most famous recording studio in the world – a birth place of modern music.” In this studio, users can experiment with tape effects to test out different vocal effects for a song. Users also are able to use a J37, a recording machine, to attempt to recreate famous songs that have been recorded in the studio.
In Studio Three, users are able to explore the different microphones and instruments that recorded some of the most famous voices of all time. Viewers are also able to get a close look at the microphone collection in detail.
The tour ends in the mastering room where, according to Inside Abbey Roads, “engineers give recordings the last bit of polish.” Some information users can learn about include: online mixing and mastering, cutting vinyl and the invention of the stereo.
By creating this interactive website, fans are able to truly connect with the artists they love so dearly, and actually understand what it takes to create a global sound and image. Overall, the transparency, integration and interaction the studio has created through this experience is a groundbreaking idea for the industry, and allows viewers to connect with piece of history.
