There's something about England
by Brett Benko
When I was growing up, I remember hearing my father tell me stories of what he did in London. He was 22-years-old when he went there. His experiences included taking a bus tour of Oxford, getting lost in roundabouts, and seeing Stonehenge. He also saw Avebury (a lesser known henge).
Many of the locations he visited in the '70s are still popular today. Among them, he recommended Hyde Park, the changing of the guard at the Royal Palace, and Harrod’s – a department store that offers unique product lines not found in the States.
My oldest sister also visited London during her undergrad at Kent State University. She spent a year in Bordeaux, France and spent a weekend in London. She visited Piccadilly Circus, the royal palace, the Tower of London and meandered her way through the city. Being in London brought comfort to her. She said, “After being in France, it felt just like coming home because the culture was so similar. It’s a great city that’s very polite and clean.”

In the fall of 2011, I was given the opportunity to join the course Global Advertising & PR: London 2012. I saved and borrowed money and worked extra hours to make the trip a reality. The course has delivered on my standards and expectations.
One of the aspects about this course that I found appealing was the opportunity to develop a functioning online portfolio for potential employers. The class itself has been interactive, engaging, and most importantly, fun!
I get the sense that the instructors really want to make this a definitive, life changing experience for us. Their enthusiasm has spread like a fever pitch. We’ve been preparing for this trip by researching, presenting, and developing ourselves as professionals. I’m ready to gain insight into a culture that’s both a slice of home and a melting pot for Europe.
I want to do as many Harry Potter-related activities as possible. In addition, I’d like to visit Grosvenor Square, the Tower of London, the Royal Palace, Stonehenge, The London Eye, the SEA Life Aquarium, and whatever else I have time to visit. The number of activities we have the opportunity to experience in 17 days is mind-boggling!
London will help shape and define me because of my father. His trip holds special significance in my parents' history. They were dating for a while during his trip to London.
“At the end of each day I’d call your mom excited to tell her what I did. It was during that trip I realized I didn’t want to experience anything like this without her. I decided on that trip she was the woman I would marry.”
London has already affected my family in a profound way. This class offers the prospect that it’s a life changing experience. Take those words to heart. If there’s a class that can deliver on that prospect, it’s this one. This course will teach you about yourself while learning about another culture. You’ll be challenged and recognized for hard work. It very well could change your life in unexpected ways if you let it.
