These are a few of my favorite things...If I had to pick one favorite thing about this trip so far, it wouldn’t be Big Ben, or The Tower, or Madame Tussauds. It might be seeing Dame Judi Dench live onstage in the new play Peter and Alice. Yes, it might be that. It might be seeing The Royal Shakespeare Company perform A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Globe or As You Like It in Stratford-On-Avon. It might be buying flowers from Patand her son David on Farringdon Road near our flats. It might be Robert and Dee and Jane from The Sock Mob.
Or it might be the Spicy Lamb Stew at Gail’s in Exmouth Market. Or talking to Ollie at The Bowler, or the bunches of other people who took time to talk with me about class in the world today. But although all of those things I just listed, and the things I did not list, were really fabulous, my all time favorite thing about London will be Doug.
Doug is a Saluki. He traveled along the streets of London with the rest of theSock Mob, but I think he did more than anyone else. Doug was just happy to be with people, no matter who they were. If they petted him, he liked just that. He asked for little else and just to show how comfortable he was in his skin he would lie down next to the homeless people we visited and rest his head in their lap. Doug was a great humanitarian and a gentleman: he let everyone else go first, was happy to follow, was happy…to be. Handsome, isn’t he?
This little video is an homage to the other friends I made during this trip, the ones I traveled here with. |
